As part of its "Piece of the Month" project, Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre is celebrating throughout the month of April the Ibn Sina Gold Medal, which was awarded to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in October 1998. The award is considered one of the highest awarded to global personalities who have made tremendous efforts in the field of promoting culture and education, which is one of the main objectives of UNESCO.
His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah received the medal from Federico Mayor, Director-General of UNESCO, during a special session held in the presence of delegates of member states of the Organization's Executive Council.
In his speech during the special ceremony, the Ruler of Sharjah described the exhibition held on this occasion as an important cultural and civilizational event that expresses the spirit of human brotherhood using culture as a means to achieve the noble goals of self-discipline and human advancement towards civilization and progress.
The Ruler of Sharjah paid tributes to UNESCO for playing a strategic and largest role in achieving this goal. He pointed out that the selection of Sharjah as the Cultural Capital of the Arab world in 1998 had exerted tremendous impact on Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates and the greater Arab world as it embodies what the world is capable of -- an appreciation of the great civilizational achievements that have been achieved in the UAE in various fields of development.
The Sharjah Ruler stressed that culture has been given the space it deserves in the Emirate, as it is a common cultural heritage of all human beings. “The contemporary civilizational and cultural identity of our people and our nation derives its roots from the sources of knowledge and excellence in which the world knew the Arab-Islamic civilization, and which enriched human civilization with the extraordinary achievements of science and knowledge by illustrious names. Its glory is still present today,” he said.
He pointed out that progress of the human being is the cornerstone of all development and the leadership is keen to provide the necessary cultural and social services for all sections of society, especially for children and young people, as it forms the foundation on which the future is built -- to be shining bright for our sons and daughters.
It is worth mentioning that "Piece of the Month" is a project launched by Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre, and aims to shed light on a monthly basis on one of the distinctive pieces of history from the collection of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, which represents extraordinary achievements in various scientific and cultural fields.
