His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, was born in 1939 and became the Ruler of Sharjah in 1972, succeeding his late brother Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Qasimi (may he rest in peace). His Highness began his formal education at Al Eslah School in 1948 and obtained a Bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Agriculture at Cairo University in 1971. His Highness earned a PhD in History with distinction from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom in 1985 and a PhD in Philosophy in Political Geography of the Gulf from Durham University in 1999.
Before assuming power, His Highness held several positions, including Chairman of the Municipality in 1965 and Director of the Ruler's Office in Sharjah in 1971. He was the first Minister of Education in the UAE in 1971 and established numerous governmental, cultural, artistic, and social institutions in Sharjah to achieve notable development for its people. His Highness also founded academic institutions such as the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah. Currently, His Highness presides over several educational institutions, including the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy, the University of Khorfakkan, the University of Kalba, and the University of Al Dhaid.
The Emirate of Sharjah is experiencing prosperity and development across all levels, thanks to the vision and guidance of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah. Under His Highness's leadership, Sharjah has earned numerous prestigious titles, including the World Book Capital, the Cultural Capital of the Arab World, the Islamic Culture Capital, the Healthy City, the Child Friendly City, and the Age-Friendly City.
His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah has received numerous honourary degrees in various fields, in recognition of his efforts and contributions to the advancement of different sectors, including theater, culture, literature, and history, as well as his service to education and scientific research. Additionally, His Highness has been awarded many medals and honours in appreciation of his role in strengthening bilateral relations between the UAE and friendly countries, as well as fostering cooperation with Arab universities and the protection of Arab heritage.
His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah has also received many awards in recognition of his prominent role in the fields of literature, theater, culture, poetry, the arts, and sports at both the local and international levels.
